Topics include: increases in monthly salaries, the allocation of money to various Jewish community offices, religious ceremonies, plans for vacant lots, travel for medical treatment and rest, kosher meat, ledgers with the amount of meat purchased in 1949 (for meat tax), correspondence from the Mayor of Baghdad regarding trash removal, financial summaries, budgets, salary reports, newspaper clipping, employee raises, purchased goods, women’s ritual purity laws, correspondence with individual rabbis, girls’ school, applications for permits, and an index of registered judges' names. There are also correspondence and flyers in Judeo-Arabic; the Judeo-Arabic flyers are from the Tomkhe Torah Society.

These archival documents contain correspondence between the head of Shamash Secondary School to different institutes: Ministry of Defense, Directorate of the Scholar Mission, Directorate of Recruitment, Robert College in Istanbul regarding students’ academic matters. It also includes student folders containing grades, achievement reports, smallpox vaccines, warning for misbehaving, recommendation letters, graduation diplomas, and photographs.

Included in this item are correspondence from the Baghdadi Jewish community to the Iraqi and British governments concerning increasing anti-Jewish and sectarian harassment experienced by community members, correspondence signed by Sir Kinahan Cornwallis, and summaries of the Jewish Daily Post. This item also contains documents describing the arrest of individuals, restrictions on movement, and a violent attack on the Jewish residents of a village near Mosul in early 1941. Also in the documents are: newspaper clippings announcing students accepted into different institutions of higher education; a section of a 1948 newspaper with articles pertaining to the Arab-Israeli War of 1948; documents discussing education issues, such as Baghdadi Jewish students encountering difficulty in being accepted to certain state schools and failing tests at an unusually high rate, enrollment rates in schools, and teachers at Jewish schools suspected of propagating Zionism; a file folder with a student record, photograph, doctor’s notes, and examination results; a statement condemning Zionism signed by several prominent members of the Baghdadi Jewish community addressed to the Secretary of the League of Nations, Geneva.

This is a collection of receipts issued from Ezra Menahem Daniel Sports Ground paying for services such as water, electricity, electronic equipment, food, soda, taxis, and construction materials. Other documents include a spreadsheet of revenues and expenses for the stadium in 1955, and a royal decree to elect Rabbi Khedouri as Deputy Rabbi.

This item contains documents and correspondences pertaining to Baghdadi Jews abrogating their Iraqi citizenship in order to travel abroad. Included is an offer from a travel company about arranging transportation for the airlift of Iraqi Jews from Iraq to Israel (Operation Ezra and Nehemiah), complaints to the Iraqi government concerning police interference with Jews traveling, announcements to the Baghdadi Jewish community about opportunities to learn more about the citizenship laws and to forfeit citizenship, and correspondence between the government and the Jewish community concerning citizens who desire to forfeit their citizenship but have complicated circumstances. The item also contains letters in Judeo-Arabic, many which include community members' names.

This is correspondence from the Iraqi government about incident reports, security concerns, border protection and disputes with Iran, and (reportedly) stolen sheep in the Sulaymaniyah region of Iraq.

Included are correspondence with the Iraqi government about an orchard; accounting materials; the law allowing the liquidation of a family fund. In a file with the handwritten title “Menahem Account and Promissory Bills Received by the Court” are a letter from the Administrative Committee for the Jewish Community to an accountant regarding payments for his service; handwritten calculations; endowment registration; a chapter of a law for endowments published by the government of Iraq under King Faisal II; expenses of the Menahem Daniel schools; a letter to Jewish Lay Council asking to acquire revenues and expenses for Menahem Daniel’s endowments in 1944.

This is correspondence between the President of the Jewish Community, the Jewish Religious Court, Iraqi government departments, and public and private employers regarding salaries, legal cases, payments, receipts and invoices.

These are documents from the Baghdadi Jewish Community. They contain correspondence regarding marriages, divorces, civil disputes; the birthday celebrations of the Iraqi king, responses to inquires about the treatment of Iraqi Jews under Iraq’s citizenship laws, the history of Jews in Iraq, and the provision of Jewish artifacts to the Iraqi Museum. There are receipts for furniture stores and other vendors, invoices; budget allocations, deficits, and planning for various community organizations and institutions; ritual slaughtering administration, names of butchers with the numbers of animals slaughtered, names of community organization members, ledgers of payments for goods or fees, building plans, provisions for school children, concerns over hospital food distribution, blanket distribution to the poor, receptions, meetings, shipment orders, import and export of goods, the care of orphans, and a census on the number of synagogues in Baghdad in 1945 (40). There are copies of a printed text titled “Appeal to Save the Children.” Letters include: the President of the Jewish Community to the Controller of Foodstuffs in Baghdad thanking the Controller for the allotment of sugar and tea for the students at the Rahel Shamoon School; addressing complaints at the Meir Elias Hospital in Baghdad; purchasing blankets for the poor via the Poor Welfare Society; sending money rather than clothes from an importer in New York City to the poor in Baghdad since clothing costs have gone up.

This is archival material from the Baghdadi Jewish Community containing legal documents related to the disbursement and management of several different endowments for Baghdadi Jewish institutions such as the Albert David Sasson School, Meir Elias Hospital, and Reemah Kadoorie Eye Hospital. There are original deeds and contracts regarding property distribution, the distribution of waqfs (endowments), and tapu sanad deeds (state-owned land granting occupancy).

It includes: letters to and from the Minister of Justice concerning the death of Rabbi Sassoon Khedouri; requests for assistance from community members; elections for the Jewish community council; donation of Torahs to the Ministry of Justice’s library upon request; letters to and from the General Organization for Housing regarding the Jewish cemetery; correspondence with the Secretary of Frozen Funds regarding: the sale of frozen shares in the Times publishing company; shareholders with revoked nationality; company liquidation; and debt repayment; correspondence with the Revolutionary Command Council including letters to Saddam Hussein, then Deputy of the Revolutionary Command Council, regarding complaints about the seizure of property revenues and confiscation of a bank account belonging to Iraqi Jews; correspondence with the Director of Public Security regarding new citizenship laws; correspondence with the president of the Alliance of Non-Zionist Jews in Canada regarding his visit to Iraq; and correspondence to the United Nations, expressing the Iraqi Jewish community’s loyalty to Iraq. There is also a request to the Ministry of Information for Assyrian, Sabean, Yazidi, and Jewish holidays to be included in the annual calendar; a letter from the General Broadcasting and Television Office regarding the film, Man of Peace; a letter regarding the gift of Torah scrolls to the Jewish communities in England and Sweden; a letter to Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr (President of Iraq), complaining of the continuation of discrimination against Jews in spite of the decree to treat Iraqi Jews equally as Iraqi citizens; letters to the Ministry of the Interior regarding the freezing of bank accounts; permission to sell properties; the confiscation of a synagogue in Basrah; maintaining and revocation of Iraqi nationality; and a list of community members eligible to serve on the administrative council. There are also copies of the Iraqi Gazette from 1958, 1961 and 1973.

Included are rental agreements between the President of the Jewish community and various community members; ledgers of property holdings; correspondence regarding the distribution of endowments to schools and hospitals; legal paperwork for establishment of an endowment; insurance policy invoices from the South British Insurance Company, L’Union and the Iraq Insurance Office; insurance policies issued by the Legal & General Assurance Society Limited and the South British Insurance Company, electricity and water bills; and contracts. The insurance policies cover everything from fire and auto to typewriters and Persian rugs. Many of the documents are administered by the Jewish Lay Council, overseen by Eliyahu Hiam Youfek or Heskel David Shemtob.

The item also contains correspondence between the Administrative Committee for Iraqi Jews and that Menahem S. Daniel school, and the Jewish Lay Council in Baghdad and representatives in Hilla Province. There is also a letter or essay in Hebrew about Sepharadim in Israel and students attending schools there.

The correspondence references the statues of the Jewish community #36 (1931) and laws of the community #77 (1931); elections for the Jewish Lay Council; names of those eligible for elected office; ballots for various districts; vote tallies; meeting attendance records; and a statement from the Jewish Lay Council to the Jewish community that the president of the Jewish Lay Council is running for the position of president of the Baghdadi community. There are also letters to various community and government officials, including the head of the Jewish butchers, and foreign consular offices; several copies of a list of members of the Jewish Lay Council, 1944-1948; and references to budget planning.
